Supporting Women To Attain Higher-Value Work

DOT partners with the S&P Global Foundation for the second year to train and place lower-income women into IT and community engagement jobs

Daughters Of Tomorrow (DOT) is partnering with the S&P Global Foundation for the second year on the Creating Alternative Pathways (CAP) programme, to provide job training and economic opportunities for low-income women in Singapore, for the second consecutive year. With increased support from the S&P Global Foundation, in the form of a S$100,000 grant, DOT aims to upskill 80 low-income women and match at least 70% of them to employment opportunities in growth industries including IT and data operations, and community and social services.

Thriving Despite the Pandemic

Despite the economic challenges of 2020, DOT managed to train 60 women and placed close to 50 women into either high-touch or high-tech sectors such as Personal and Maternal Care, Data Entry, Administration and Digitalisation in the first year of the program, supported by a grant of S$67,500 from the S&P Global Foundation.

The second year of the program will focus on IT and community engagement jobs, which are key high-growth and resilient industries. DOT plans to surpass its 2020 target of job placement for women from low-income communities and expects to see at least a 15 percent increase in average income upon entering this programme. DOT is also working towards a job retention rate of 70 percent after six months, and 50 percent after one year.

DOT will also continue to:

  • Increase awareness of the alternative paths to industries accessible to DOT women through introduction and training sessions
  • Conduct job preparation workshops to facilitate their return to the workforce.
  • Advocate for employers to provide working hours compatible with local childcare centre operational hours. As a result of this initiative, DOT exceeded its target number of employers agreeing to childcare-compatible work hours by more than 50 percent in 2020.

As a result of this initiative, DOT exceeded its target number of employers agreeing to childcare-compatible work hours by more than  50 percent in 2020.

“Despite technological advancements and high value employment opportunities available in Singapore, many of DOT’s clients have not been exposed to such opportunities. Even if they are aware, they may not have adequate qualifications or skill sets to attain employment in these industries,” said Fannie Lim, Executive Director of DOT. “By providing a clear and comprehensive pathway, DOT is perfectly placed to provide guidance and work preparation to women hoping to enter the social services and STEM sectors.”

“The S&P Global Foundation is pleased to partner DOT for the second year,” said Cheryl Chen, Director, Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability, Asia Pacific, S&P Global. “We are a firm believer in and supporter of equitable access to upskilling and economic opportunities, especially for women who are then able to provide for their families and in turn create more opportunities for other family members. The focus on high-growth and resilient sectors including IT and community and social services will help to ensure that their skills remain relevant and in-demand.”

Local Technology Consulting Firm Teaches DOT Hires the Business of Compliance

Technology consulting firm, GenPact, has hired two DOT women since July 2021. They are working as compliance agents in its Developer Operations Policy Compliance team. The women typically process requests which relate to workflows and then apply the appropriate compliance policy.

“In our relentless pursuit of a world that works better for people, we constantly strive to educate, empower, and engage communities we work with, so that together, we can create a common humanity and an equal world. As Singapore quickly emerges as the digital hub of Asia, we feel privileged to be able to help bridge the gap between opportunities and talent. We are excited to partner with Daughters Of Tomorrow and empower women from the grassroots. This is not only an opportunity for underprivileged women to build financial independence for themselves and their families, but to also increase the participation of women in tech, a field highly plagued by gender disparity,” said Xin Ying, Vice President (Human Resources) at Genpact.

About Daughters Of Tomorrow

Daughters Of Tomorrow (DOT) is an IPC charity empowering underprivileged women into sustained employment, thus enabling their families towards social mobility. DOT complements existing training and workforce-related agencies by connecting volunteers and community resources to enable each woman on an individual level.

DOT’s beneficiaries are women aged 20 to 60 from low-income families (surviving on S$200 to less than S$650 per capita per month), most of whom reside in government-subsidised rental flats. Many face multiple internal and external stressors that affect their job prospects and their ability to break out of poverty. Since its incorporation in August 2014, DOT has positively impacted more than 1000 women through their skills-training, job-bridging and support programmes.
